Recycling & The Environment

  • The aluminum can recycling process saves 95% of the energy needed to produce aluminum from bauxite ore, as well as natural resources.
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours.
  • 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute!
  • There is no limit to the number of times an aluminum can can be recycled.
  • Throwing away only one aluminum can wastes as much energy as pouring out a whole cup of gasoline.
  • To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down.
  • A stack of newspapers only three feet high equals one 30-foot tree.
  • Every ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees and approximately 380 gallons of oil.
  • Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year!
  • Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic beverage bottles every hour!
  • Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
  • Each ton of recycled glass saves nine gallons of fuel.
  • Energy saved from recycling one glass bottle will light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.
  • The average household generates almost 25 pounds of recyclable material every week.

Every single can, bottle, plastic jug, newspaper, cardboard box,
and corrugated box that is recycled is a step toward easing the burden
we place on our environment.

Recycling also reduces the United States' dependence
on foreign oil imports.

  • Use compact florescent light bulbs. CLF's use 60% less energy than a regular bulb.
  • Clean or replace your air conditioner filters regularly.
  • Try to use the washing machine or dishwasher only when it is completely filled.
  • Compost your organic waste.
  • Buy reusable shopping bags.
  • Use rechargeable batteries.
  • Landscape with native trees.
  • Buy fresh foods instead of frozen foods. Frozen food requires 10 times more energy to produce and maintain.
  • Carpool with your co-workers and classmates.
  • Keep your car tuned up.
  • Check your tires; make sure they are fully inflated.
